A fifty-year history of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society 1845–1895 : in 3 parts
The Russian Geographical Society was founded by supreme order of emperor Nicholas I in 1845. Over the years, the Society was run by representatives of the Russian Imperial House, scholars and state actors.
This three-volume edition is a re-publication of the Jubilee Compilation of 1896, which sums up the activities of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society during the first 50 years of its existence. The man who put the Jubilee Compilation together is called Petr Petrovich Semenov-Tian-Shansky (1827-1914). He was a leading Russian geographer, botanist, traveller, state actor and public character. Tian-Shansky was added to his surname because he classified the Tian-Shan mountains. P. P. Semenov was the vice-president of the Russian Geographic Society from 1873 right up until his death.
