This self-study guide is intended for people who wish to learn Portuguese on their own and who wish to learn to read and translate, with the help of a dictionary, original literature on everyday and socio-political topics, to understand simple oral speech and to be able to explain themselves in the language. The structure and content of the self-teaching book make it possible to use it in the classroom under the guidance of a teacher.

When selecting and systematizing the self-teaching materials, the author considered it necessary, first of all, to provide a certain minimum of commonly used vocabulary (about 1700 lexical units) and grammatical rules necessary to achieve the set goal and create a basis for further improvement in the language.
