The author of the book during the Great Patriotic War was an officer of the 8th Guards Army, commanded by General V.I.Chuikov. On the basis of personal impressions and memories, the author covers the events in Berlin in April - May 1945: attempts to negotiate the surrender of the parliamentarians of the Reich Chancellery headed by General Krebs, the acceptance of the surrender from the Chief of Defense of Berlin and the signing of unconditional surrender in Karlshorst; tells about the first activities of the Soviet military administration, democratic organizations to establish a new Germany. The story is illustrated with original documents and photographs.
