The paper examines the relationship between the United States and Western Europe, the commonality and difference of their positions on the most important problems of international relations, the increasing rivalry between the Atlantic partners in such areas as arms trade, nuclear energy, monetary and financial sphere. Special attention is paid to analysing the approaches of the USA and Western Europe to relations with socialist and developing countries. The authors show the evolution of the Atlantic doctrine at the present stage, the struggle over the issues of Atlanticism and Europeanism.
