The history of international tourism in the West - from Cook's office to the Holiday Inns empire - is presented in a lively and fascinating form. It shows the contribution of foreign currency receipts from foreign tourism to the finances of both industrialised and developing countries. An attempt is made to assess the role of tourism in the economic progress of individual countries. The tendencies of development of "travel industry" at the turn of the XXI century and prospects of development of international tourist relations of the USSR are outlined.
