This is an experience of comparative study of the lexicon of two languages – French and Russian. Based on the analysis of dictionaries and translations, it traces some general and specific semantic features of French words and the regularities of their use in speech in connection with the peculiarities of the organization of utterances in French. It will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students of philological universities, teachers and translators, as well as to all persons interested in French and Russian languages and their comparative analysis. The coverage of the problems of general semantics and the applied methods of comparative study of the lexicon of the two languages in the system and in speech may interest a wide range of philologists.
