Slavic Antiquities: An Ethnolinguistic dictionary : in 5 volumes / under the general editorship. by N. I. Tolstoy. – Vol. 2: D (To Give) – K (Crumbs). – 2nd ed., rev. and suppl.

The dictionary Slavic Antiquities is the first attempt at compiling an encyclopedic dictionary on the traditional spiritual culture of all the Slavic peoples. It sums up more than a century’s studies of the Slavic languages, folklore, mythology, ethnography, folk art. The Slavs have retained ancient archaisms in their languages, rites, beliefs and customs, unlike other Indo-European peoples that are akin to them, so Slavic data are of great significance for the reconstruction of the Indo-European linguistic and cultural antiquities.

While being of an exceptional scientific interest, the work represents thrilling reading for the broadest readership. The dictionary tells us about the various sides of the Slavic people’s spiritual life. Special entries deal with the popular beliefs concerning God and the Holy Virgin, the holy guardians, paradise and hell, wizards and witches, ghosts and the evil spirit. Described in detail are the people’s festive life, the Slav’s family life and rites.

The concept of the dictionary emerged in the field of ethnolinguistics. The language, which preserves the most archaic elements of the world outlook, psychology, and culture, turned out to be one of the richest and most reliable sources for the reconstruction of the prehistoric forms of the human culture that lack written evidence.

The publication was prepared by the staff of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Edited by Academician N. Tolstoi.

The second revised and expanded edition of the dictionary includes new ethnolinguistic and folklore-ethnographic data, extended bibliography, and an updated illustrative series.
