This textbook is intended for students of the first year of study at language universities of the USSR. The textbook consists of: 1. Introduction, which provides general information about the Vietnamese language. 2. 28 lessons. 3. A consolidated Vietnamese-Russian dictionary. The first ten lessons provide explanations of sounds and tones, phonetic exercises, lesson-by-lesson dictionaries, texts, lexicogrammatical exercises, and grammatical explanations. Lessons 11-28 consist of texts, lexicogrammatical exercises, grammar exercises and lesson dictionaries. Where appropriate, lexical comments are also given. A large part of the texts are compiled by the authors, while the remaining texts are adapted original materials. The lessons are mainly based on everyday vocabulary, and their topics reflect the requirements of the regular curriculum of the initial period of study. Grammatical explanations are very brief and have only practical purposes.
