About the author

This textbook is intended for students of foreign language institutes and faculties who study English as a primary or second language. It can also be used for independent reading at senior courses of non-language universities. The textbook contains texts of country studies, but does not aim at systematic coverage of any particular course. The texts are divided into three sections: physical and economic geography of England, history of England, and government and political life in modern England. As far as possible, the texts are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. The material of the textbook is selected from the works of English authors of the last decades: textbooks, monographs, articles, reference books, encyclopedias, and periodicals. The texts are not adapted, but sometimes they are significantly reduced; in some cases the texts are combined from several sources. The manual is accompanied by a dictionary of proper names with an indication of their pronunciation.
