   After the classical works of Russian 19th-century historians this book is the first monographical investigation of the partitions of Poland in 1772, 1793 and 1795 and the role of Russian diplomacy in them. The Partitions – the starting point of the Polish question that remained at the centre of European politics for a century and a half – are viewed in the context of forming a system of international relations in Central and Eastern Europe.

The book is based on Russian sources and foreign archives, many of which have been introduced into scholarly discourse for the first time.
