Stegny’s book focuses on the reign of Emperor Nicholas II. At its centre lies the complex relationship between two sisters – Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Fyodorovna. One of them was canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church as Saint and Passion Bearer, the other as Holy Martyr. Yet neither of them were fully understood by their contemporaries nor did they receive the recognition they deserved from their descendants. Too much in their lives and character remains the subject of tactful (and more often opportunistic) omission. Meanwhile, specifically that which has been left unsaid, can help, if not to understand, then to feel more deeply and hopefully objectively, the tragic history of the end of the monarchy in Russia.
