According to the external outline of events, this is a book about the French Revolution: about the web entangling the Revolution’s personal and state intrigues and figures pulled into them; about cunningly woven European diplomacy and the ‘diamond’ in its crown — the secret diplomacy of Catherine the Great. It is more difficult to name the genre of this book, which has been written by a recognized expert on Russian history and eminent diplomat. This is a painstaking work of scholarly research which has literally grown out of piles of literature and archived documents (among them were those unbeknown even to historians!). Yet it reads as a gripping story with an unexpected turn of events offering a succession of resolved and as yet unresolved mysteries. That is why it can enjoy equal success with professionals and scholars, and with readers of different kids who enjoy authentic literature. There is also another reason for this. Surprisingly, the far-off events and heroes of the book have turned out to strike an unusually close chord with our contemporary reader, ringing true with their thoughts trials and tribulations. After two centuries it is as if they literally speak to our personal life experience — the experience of turmoil.
