This publication is the fruit of historical and documentary research. It is the result of fifteen years of study of the Catherinian Era and includes work carried out in the archives of Russia, France, England, and to a lesser extent, Germany. The author’s aim is to make clear his point of view on a number of key topics surrounding the rule of Catherine II, which continue to be the subject of discussion. Thereby, the author attempts to reconstruct the underlying logic of one of the most significant periods of Russian history.
