This training manual contains a collection of exercises to help acquire the elementary skills of interpreting from and into German. It includes training cycles aimed at developing the interpreter's memory, attention, speech and diction, and language switching skills. The manual brings a substantial volume of terminology into the interpreter's active vocabulary, including geographical names and proper names. In creating the exercises, the latest methods of teaching interpretation were used. The manual is based on the methodological principles set out by the author in: Professional education for interpreters (SPb., 2000) and Professional training for interpreters (SPb., 2001).
The new edition has two important sections added: interpreting speeches with many examples and a two-way dictionary of contrastive toponymy.
This manual is aimed first and foremost at students specializing in interpreting. However, it can also be of use to professional interpreters. The readers’ level of German should be quite high. Nevertheless, specific exercises can be adapted to teach the building blocks of interpreting in the older years of specialized schools which provide an in-depth study of German.
