This training manual offers a set of exercises aimed to help acquire the initial skills of interpreting from Spanish and into Spanish. It includes training cycles aimed at developing the interpreter’s memory, attention, speaking technique and diction, and the skill of changing between languages. The manual brings a substantial volume of terminology into the interpreter’s active vocabulary, including geographical names and proper names. In creating the exercises, the latest methods of teaching interpretation were used. The manual is based on the principles set out in the works of I.S. Alekseevna, such as Professional education for interpreters SPB 2000. (Professional training for interpreters. 2Nd ed. SPB.: SOYUZ 2001). This initial stage methodology was integrated into interpreting education programmes from/into English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese in the Saint Petersburg School of Conference Interpreting and Translation at Herzen University, which successfully prepares interpreters for international organizations.
This manual is aimed first and foremost at students studying interpreting. However it can also be of use to professional interpreters who want to improve their level. The readers’ level of Spanish should be quite high. Nevertheless, specific exercises can be adapted to teach the building blocks of interpreting in the older years of specialized schools which provide an in-depth study of Spanish.
