One life – two destinies
The author of this book has a remarkable biography and his book goes far and beyond the usual concept of a memoir. S.I. Kaufman worked for thirty years in the Bolshoi Theatre during the time of USSR, including a period of study in the Moscow Academy of Choreography. He progressed from solo ballet performer to deputy director general, i.e. artistic director of the Bolshoi Theatre. It seemed that he had an established artistic career; service to this beloved Theatre (only with a capital T!), participation in fantastic performances with talented artists, worldwide tours, ovations… Yet at the same time he was collaborating with the KGB in foreign intelligence and counter espionage, carrying out high-risk missions both on home territory and abroad. The author recounts his work in a sincere and confiding manner; both about the Bolshoi Theatre and his other sphere of work that was hidden from prying eyes. He openly talks about the two fateful decisions, which he undertook in his life, and which he never regretted.
The book is aimed at a wide circle of readers interested in recalling the illustrious names of artists from an almost bygone age, and in trying to understand the difficult lives of people from the Soviet past. And most importantly, in becoming aware that every person chooses their own principles, which they stay true to for the rest of their lives.
